Flax Seed & Fish Oil to Lessen Chron’s Flair Ups

Dealing with Crohn’s symptoms can be frustrating, especially if you have severe symptoms or frequently reoccurring outbreaks. You doctor probably has you on medicines and perhaps other therapies, but if they aren’t enough, there are other options. Flax seed and fish oil are great ways to help fight Crohn’s disease and keep your symptoms at bay.

Flax seed is just the seed from a flax plant. You can buy it at health food stores as a seed for cooking. Don’t know what to do with your flax seed? Check out health food cookbooks and web pages for some tasty recipes. If you don’t like have time to prepare it, can’t find flax seed in your area, or just don’t like the taste, then there are flax seed oil supplements available on the market.

Fish oils makes up most of the fat in “fatty” fish. You can get your fish oil naturally by eating mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon.

While supplements are available for these products, the best way to get any important nutrient is from the food you eat. Only use supplements if you can’t work fatty fish or flax seed into your diet. Not only is food just a better way to get your nutrients, many fish oil supplements on the market can be dangerous because they use fish from contaminated streams.

Both flax seed and fish oil contain special kinds of fats called omega-3 fatty acids. You’ve probably heard these fats referred to as “good fats” because they promote good health and should often be increased to provide a healthy diet. Not only can they help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cancer; they can also help with Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

In addition to their other benefits, the omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil and flax seed, are powerful anti-inflammatories. When used regularly, they can help reduce bowel swelling and causes the symptoms of Crohn’s.

The omega-3 fats contained in fish oil are called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while flax seed contains a omega- fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). While these are all omega-3’s that help with Crohn’s, they are also different chemicals that operate in different manners. That is why it may be helpful to have both these substances in your diet instead of one or the other.

While they can be helpful in easing and preventing the return of Crohn’s symptoms, flax seed and fish oil should not be used as your only treatment. They should be taken in conjunction with a healthy diet, medicine, and alternative treatments to ease the symptoms of Crohn’s and prevent them from coming back.
